Obituary for Alfred Wittreich (1928 – 2024)
Alfred Wittreich died peacefully on June 2nd at the age of 96, surrounded by his family. He was born on February 27, 1928, in Handlern, Gottschee, in what is now Slovenia, to Magdalena and Josef Wittreich. He immigrated to the United States in 1951, settling in Ridgewood, Queens, where he lived his entire life.
Alfred was a member of the Catholic Kolping Society and a parishioner at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Roman Catholic Church in Ridgewood. For many years, he sang with the Gottscheer Men’s Choir locally and at events in the United States and Canada.
He worked for the Phelps-Dodge Corporation in Laurel Hill, Queens, NY, at their Copper Smelting and Refinery plant for many years until his retirement.
Alfred is predeceased by his parents, his brother, Josef, and his sister, Hilda. He is survived by his brother Robert and wife Marie; his nephews, Gerhard Wittreich (Donna) and Helmut Wittreich (Barbara) and his niece, Karen Cook (George); one great-niece, Kristin Wittreich; five great-nephews Brian Wittreich (Gennine), Alex Cook, Jason Cook, Christof Wittreich, and Markus Wittreich, and two great-great-nephews, Francis and Thomas Wittreich.
