Obituary of Ernesto Ernie Sanchez

On Saturday, March 6, 2021, Ernesto (Ernie) Sanchez, loving husband and father, passed away at the age of 70. Ernie was born on August 10, 1950, in San Sebastian, Puerto Rico to his loving mother Ramona Hernandez. Ernie was a general contractor who could fix anything. He met his wife in Luz (Lucy) Santiago in 1980 and they later got married on February 12, 1993. Reaffirming his love and commitment to her and his son Jesse. Ernie saw life differently than most. He was optimistic where others saw old and broken, Ernie saw an opportunity to repair and refresh giving things new life. If only, we had an Ernie to repair the damage that Covid has done to our family. Ernie had a passion for underdogs like the Mets, he loved nature especially eagles, he loved fishing and had the biggest and greenest thumb ever growing beautiful plants. And boy did he appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of old automobiles. I’d be remiss if I did not mention Ernie’s appreciation for good food, as a cook himself. He passed that knack onto his son. He was a coffee aficionado, loved movies and sports. He and Lucy would go on many adventures together from trips to Puerto Rico, to Tennessee and many, many day trips in and around New York City. Ernie not only was a loving husband, he was dedicated to Lucy and made sure she had everything she ever needed. In fact, if Lucy was out and about Ernie was sure to be there. He doted on her! As a father, Ernie ensured his son Jesse had a bright future. He encouraged his son to continue his education and go into finance. He wanted only the best for Jesse. And as a father-in law, he was so genuine, kind and supportive. How could anyone not drop the “in-law”. He was our Pepa! He always was saying, “I can do that for you, I can fix this for you!” When he became a grandfather for the first time to Jamil, he became known lovingly as Pepa! Ernie and Lucy helped wherever and whenever they were needed. They spent many of days at the Bronx Zoo and the Museum of Natural History. He was then blessed with his granddaughter Julianna. Pepa’s love knew no bounds with this little lady. He showered her with love and attention. Of course more family trips to White Post Farms and more! Erni was a loving brother to Alicia whom he adored. Erni was preceded in death by his mother, Ramona (to whom he regularly paid his respects). He is survived by his wife Lucy, his son Jesse, his daughter-in-law Jennifer, his grandson Jamil, his granddaughter Julianna, his brother Sammuel, his sister Alicia, his niece Loudes and her husband Victor, his nephew Kai, his grand niece Brittany and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Viewing is being held at Morton Funeral Home / Ridgewood Chapels on Thursday, March 11th, from 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at 4:00pm. Burial to follow on March 12th, at 11:00 AM at Linden Hill Cemetery.
